Choosing the time
The fast runs from before sunrise until the moon rises. The evening puja is usually done after sunset and before moonrise, often with other women of the family or neighbourhood. Moonrise times vary by city, so use one trusted panchang for your own city.

Safety
A fast without water is demanding. Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, unwell, diabetic, on regular medication or elderly should speak to a doctor and keep a lighter fast with water or fruit; many families accept this as part of the tradition. Keep lamps away from saris and dupattas.

Karva Chauth is kept mainly in North and North-West India and by many families abroad. Traditionally married women fast for the long life and well-being of their husbands and families; in many homes today husbands fast too, and some unmarried women keep the fast. Sargi, the karva exchange, the songs sung while passing the thalis and the exact puja differ from region to region and family to family. Follow your family's way.
