Durga aarti · Jai Ambe Gauri

Refrain · repeat after each stanza

Jai Ambe Gauri, maiya jai Shyama Gauri.
Tumko nishidin dhyavat, Hari Brahma Shivri.

Victory to Ambe Gauri; Mother, victory to Shyama Gauri! Hari (Vishnu), Brahma and Shiva meditate on you day and night.

The older sanskritdocuments copy reads

Maang sindoor virajat, teeko mrigmad ko.
Ujjval se dou naina, Chandravadan neeko.

Sindoor shines in the parting of your hair, with a tilak of musk; your two eyes are bright, and your moon-like face is lovely.

Kanak saman kalevar, raktambar rajai.
Raktapushp gal mala, kanthan par sajai.

Your body is like gold and you are dressed in red; a garland of red flowers adorns your neck.

The older copy reads

Kehari vahan rajat, khadg khappardhari.
Sur nar muni jan sevat, tinke dukhhari.

You ride a lion and hold a sword and a khappar (bowl); gods, people and sages serve you, and you take away their sorrows.

The older copy reads खड्ग कृपाण धारी (sword and dagger).

Kanan kundal shobhit, nasagre moti.
Kotik chandra divakar, sam rajat jyoti.

Earrings shine in your ears and a pearl on your nose; your radiance equals ten million moons and suns.

Shumbh Nishumbh bidare, Mahishasur ghati.
Dhoomra vilochan naina, nishidin madmati.

You tore apart Shumbha and Nishumbha and slew Mahishasura. The second line names the demon Dhumralochana and speaks of eyes ever filled with fierce rapture.

The second line is construed in more than one way, so the meaning is given loosely. The older copy reads

Chand Mund sanhare, shonit beej hare.
Madhu Kaitabh dou mare, sur bhayheen kare.

You destroyed Chanda and Munda and Raktabija (“blood-seed”); you slew both Madhu and Kaitabha and freed the gods from fear.

शोणित बीज is Raktabija. The older copy omits संहारे and reads सुर भय दूर करे.

Brahmani Rudrani, tum Kamla Rani.
Agam Nigam bakhani, tum Shiv patrani.

You are Brahmani and Rudrani, and you are Queen Kamala (Lakshmi); the scriptures sing of you, the chief queen of Shiva.

Chaunsath yogini mangal gavat, nritya karat Bhairoon.
Bajat taal mridanga, aru bajat damroo.

The sixty-four yoginis sing auspicious songs and Bhairava dances; cymbals and drums play, and the damaru sounds.

The older copy reads

Tum hi jag ki mata, tum hi ho bharta.
Bhaktan ki dukh harta, sukh sampatti karta.

You alone are the mother of the world and its sustainer; you take away your devotees' sorrows and bring them happiness and prosperity.

Bhuja char ati shobhit, var mudra dhari.
Manvanchhit phal pavat, sevat nar nari.

Your four arms are radiant, one held in the gesture of granting boons; the men and women who serve you receive what they wish for.

The older copy reads

Kanchan thal virajat, agar kapoor bati.
Shrimalketu mein rajat, koti ratan jyoti.

In a golden plate are agarwood, camphor and wicks; in śrīmālaketu shines a light like ten million jewels.

श्रीमालकेतु is obscure and the older copy reads माल केतु; we leave it untranslated rather than guess.

Shri Ambe ji ki aarti, jo koi nar gavai.
Kahat Shivanand Swami, sukh sampatti pavai.

Whoever sings this aarti of Mother Ambe gains happiness and prosperity, says Swami Shivanand.

“Kahat Shivanand Swami” is the poet’s signature line. The older copy begins
