Valmiki Ramayana

Distinguish the Sanskrit epic from later devotional and regional retellings.

The Valmiki Ramayana is a Sanskrit epic associated with the story of Rama. Reading it as a named work helps distinguish its passages from the many later Ramayana traditions.

A source-aware library identifies the edition, kanda and passage when it claims to quote the epic. A popular devotional story may still be meaningful, but should carry the name of the tradition or retelling it follows.

Our squirrel story is therefore labelled a popular devotional telling rather than given a fabricated Valmiki citation. This introduction is a starting point; a complete reviewed Sanskrit–Hindi–English edition remains future work.
