A small squirrel, a meaningful part

Care matters more than the size of a task.

A small squirrel, a meaningful part

Popular devotional Ramayana telling · Original retelling

By the seashore, Rama’s helpers were working together to build a bridge. Some carried large stones. Others found places to set them. A little squirrel watched from the sand.

‘I cannot lift a stone like that,’ she thought. ‘But perhaps there is something I can do.’ She gathered a little sand and carried it toward the work. Then she went back for more.

A passing helper noticed her tiny load. ‘That is only a little sand,’ he said. The squirrel looked at the stones and then at her paws. For a moment, she wondered if she belonged there at all.

Rama stopped to listen. ‘A task has many parts,’ he said gently. ‘We do not all have the same strength. What matters is the care we bring and how we help one another.’

The helper made room for the squirrel. She continued her small trips while the others carried their stones. Their work was different, but their purpose was shared.

In this beloved devotional telling, the squirrel reminds families that a small act of help can still be meaningful. Everyone deserves respect, including those whose contribution is easy to overlook.
