Govardhan Puja · Annakut

What to gather

  • ☐ Material to shape a small hill: cow dung, clay, flour or food, as your family does
  • ☐ Flowers, small twigs and grass to decorate it
  • ☐ An image of Krishna
  • ☐ Roli, akshat, milk, a ghee lamp and incense
  • ☐ Several home-cooked dishes for the Annakut
  • ☐ Food or fodder for cows, if you can visit them

Steps

  1. Shape a small Govardhan. In a clean place, shape a small hill as your family does, decorate it with flowers, twigs and grass, and place Krishna’s image beside it.
  2. Offer worship. Light the lamp and incense. Offer roli, rice, milk, flowers and water to the Govardhan and to Krishna.
  3. Offer the Annakut. Arrange the dishes the family has cooked before the Govardhan, as a “mountain of food”, and offer them.
  4. Walk around the Govardhan. Walk around the hill together, often seven times, carrying water or a lamp and singing.
  5. Sing the Govardhan aarti. Wave the lamp before the Govardhan and Krishna while the family sings the aarti.
  6. Honour the cows and share prasad. If you can, feed cows or offer them fodder. Share the Annakut as prasad with family, neighbours and anyone in need.

Govardhan aarti · Shri Govardhan Maharaj

Shri Govardhan Maharaj, o Maharaj,
Tere mathe mukut viraj raheo.

Tope paan chadhe tope phool chadhe,
Tope chadhe doodh ki dhar.

Teri saat kos ki parikamma,
Chakleshvar hai vishram.

Tere gale mein kantha saj raheo,
Thodi pe heera lal.

Tere kanan kundal chamak raheo,
Teri jhanki bani vishal.

Giriraj dharan prabhu teri sharan,
Karo bhakt ka beda paar.
