Safety
The fast is optional. Anyone who is pregnant, unwell, diabetic, on regular medication, elderly or a child should eat, or speak to a doctor first; many families keep a fruit-and-milk fast instead. Keep lamps clear of the sugarcane leaves and cloth.
One festival, many traditions
Families keep this day in many ways. Some draw the Lord’s feet at the doorway or courtyard, many build a small canopy of sugarcane, and many wake the Lord with conch, bells and song. In some homes a plate or winnowing basket is beaten at the waking. Tulsi Vivah often follows on the same evening or the next day. Follow your family’s way.
